really really liked this - I’ve been thinking myself a lot lately about what a new romanticism means, what it would look like and how it would manifest now (the title of my own publication is a reference to that, haha) I’ve still got a lot to read into, and at some point actually start getting some thoughts out, but you’ve given me much to consider!
I appreciate how you refer to romanticisms plural, rather than a more definite “Romanticism” which none of its members ever experienced as one whole, as they wrote and thought in their different countries, languages, and decades. All sought the world-understanding you mention, but not quite as one.
On Archaic Networks: how tech-averse do you think these romantic nodes will end up being? (The Hinternet, for one, is hardly averse, if it’s generally pessimistic.)
Romantic nodes! I think they will not hesitate to turn to technology to disseminate their work--but they will be most pessimistic about the use of too much new technology to create the work. The habitus will be more irl. Artistic practice will turn more towards the analog, but the way it's sent out to people will take full advantage of both Archaic and Newer networks. The Hinternet is a way of proving that human arts can still confound the Web 2.0 and LLM paradigm. But New Romanticisms are contra singularity. The option for analog MUST argue for coexistence with all other options.
“Contra singularity” is a declaration by itself! Have you ever heard of Front Porch Republic? It’s an e-magazine that spawns small local, low-tech gatherings across the U.S., especially in porch-like settings. It seems like a dovetail with the gathering you mentioned.
I am so glad I read this today. My cold cold heart feels a little defrosted. Thank you ✨🌼✨
Very glad to hear it!
